Performance Review
I purchased my 40 in 2001 when it was rereleased and it has yet to break on me *edit* it finally broke in 2008.  As of summer 2005 I've used it as my side arm in every war since V3.  That in itself should say alot about this gun.  Oh yeah, I purchased it for $5.  I have to say that's the best $5 I've ever spent on a soaker.  That's $2 - $7 cheaper than other guns its size (ie Max D 3000, Liquidator, etc.).

The SS 40 gets its power from pumping air into the reservoir (aka pressurized reservoir technology), so it's a good idea to only fill it up about 75% full.  Like all classics the initial burst of water coming out of the nozzle is very powerful and has a sharp sting to it.  After the first second or so the power drops to a little below standard air pressure (Max D) levels.  The nozzle itself was measured at 1.2 mm.  Although this might appear to be on the small side it's the exact same size nozzle that's featured on many other smaller guns, including the XP 20, XP 220, and XP 240.  I prefer my SS 40 over my XP 20 and XP 220, but I do think my XP 240 is a little better.

Overall, this is a fun gun to use in soakfests, even in serious wars, again I say soakfests, if you have to - but I wouldn't use it in 1 hit kills game, unless you were playing a game with restrictions on how powerful the guns are allowed to be.  This is a good, fun gun, but if I was going to use a gun of a similar size I would choose an XP 65 or an XP 240 instead.

Structural Review

The Super Soaker 40, along with the Super Soaker 60 was among the last of the classic Super Soakers to be released.  You can tell this just by looking at the design, as the external design (besides the reservoir and barrel) closely resemble that of the XP 75, XP 150, and other first generation XPs.  That's not to say that the design is as rugged as XP soakers, but it is more rugged than the old 50, 200, and original 100.  Because the Super Soaker 40 uses the classic pinch tube technology you should store your SS 40 with the trigger pulled.

Pros: Comfortable feel, easy to fill up detatchable reservoir bottle

Cons: Somewhat fragile.
