Performance Review
The Arctic Shock
derives its name from the ice core that comes with the gun. The
ice core is basically a glorified popsicle maker. You fill it up
with water, put it in the freezer, let it freeze, take it out of the
freezer, and then put it in the bottom mounted portion of the
reservoir. The ice core DOES make your shots cold, and people
will run, so this is one gimmick that is actually worth
something. It was originally titled "Soaker Tag Elite Arctic
Shock" when it was released, as the gun came with 2 water soluble
targets - something I never ended up messing with. I have titled
it Max D here to simplify things. This gun is air pressure gun
which uses a ball valve - Max D technology.
Ok, so how good is this thing actually? It's disappointing.
I think the best thing about this gun is actually the ice core.
The shot time is an abysmal 3 at up to 70% of its range (24 - 34
ft). The crazy thing is that it actually shoots that far for 3
seconds as 3 sec * 1.8 oz/sec = 5.4 or 83% of the pressure
chamber. For the non tech geeks out there, what I'm sayin' is
that this thing fires almost all of its firing chamber without
experiencing that much of a drop in power. This is due to the max
D ball valve. With that being said, maximum range is a
disappointing 34 ft. Thirty four is about standard for a gun this
size, but the Max D ball valve technology should mean that this gun shoots
further. But as that dude from Reading Rainbow used to say, "but
don't take my word for it." iSoaker also lists a good disparity
of 3-10 ft difference in range between the Arctic Shock and other Max D
weapons.
Overall, this is a good, fun gun to use to chase people around the yard
with and hose them down with icy water. The pitifilly inept pump,
low shot time, and average (at best) range make this a gun that you
don't want to have to use during a serious water war. Lastly, the
more you use it the greater the wear will be on the trigger to ball
valve spring. Although it's not as weak as the first generation
of Max Ds it will break over time.
The 2006 version comes with a 50 oz hydropack. Unfortunately,
this version is the rarer of the 2.
Structural
Review
The
Arctic Shock shares a lot of qualities with other Max Ds - particularly
its tough outer shell and a weak spring connecting the trigger
mechanism to the nozzle ball valve. The pump is an odd square
shape. This means that the shaft won't rotate, which sounds kinda
odd, and slightly perverted, but that means your hand might slip off
the pump handle sometimes during the heat of battle. The pump
handle itself is quite small, and should feel a bit odd for teenagers
and adults. As you can see, there are a lot of awkward things
about this gun's design which I do not like.
The ice core is a feature I do like, and not only because it turns you
into Mr Freeze on the battlefield, but because, well I guess the wide
opening does make it a little easier to fill up. That's about all
folks.
Pros:
Ice core
Cons:
Poor shot time, small ineffecient pump, disappointing range

Despite Super Soaker's many rereleases of this gun, I have yet to see
it in a single serious water war. That says it all.
